~ Downton Abbey’s Final Season ~

DOES IT HAVE TO END… DIDN’T IT JUST BEGIN ?

Have you seen the acclaimed broadcast “Downton Abbey” written by Julian Fellows set in the British country side? It opens in the spring of 1912 with an article being read by the servants about the sinking of the Titanic. The scene quickly shifts to an urgent telegram being read by Lord Grantham to his three daughters at the breakfast table. So begins the saga of the Crawly family whose next heir has inevitably perished with the sinking ship. Robert Crawley who is played by the ever handsome Hugh Bonneville goes on to locate his distant relative who will inherit his castle and run it. The series chronicles the journey of Lord and Lady Grantham’s family through the ups and downs of life, all the while playing on the storyline of its servants and their lives living in the lower half of the castle. There are many things that make this series enduring. Each episode is filmed more like a movie with period costumes, and accurate accounts of history. Its stunning sets, humor, drama and relationships have the ability to whisk your imagination away on a journey back in time.

In March of this year we read the sad news via USA today that Downton Abbey is filming its final season. Downton has captured the hearts and minds of many. It’s been our Sunday routine to tuck the kids into bed, make tea and settle in for the late evening episode on PBS, for the past few years.  My husband and I stumbled upon season 1 and 2 on Netflix. Dare I admit one rainy weekend we binge watched the first two seasons. We have stayed caught up via PBS since then. We aren’t the only ones who like the series. According to People magazine Princess Kate Middleton made a visit to the set in early spring of this year. Her favorite room according to the article was the Kitchen. Who wouldn’t love to sit with Ms. Patmore the beloved cook and Daisy her assistant for a lovely chat and cup of tea?HighclereCastle_Saloon2 (2)

Our proposed remedy for the sad ending of the series is to “take a trip”! Whether you are a fan or not we hope you’ll consider joining us on our extraordinary Downton Abbey and London getaway. In collaboration with CIE tours this excursion has been designed with the British enthusiast in mind.  Our journey features a wonderful pairing of English country side estate tours partnered with three nights in London. Over the 6 days and 7 nights; picture yourself passing through Ms. Patmore’s kitchen, enjoying British high tea, an exclusive dinner served by staff dressed in Downton attire at the Kingston Bagpuize House. This exciting tour takes you to a land rich with Lords and Lady’s, King’s and Queen’s and will feature Highclere Castle, walking the streets of Bampton (the little village where Downton is filmed) as well as Bath, Oxford and Chertsey.
